Ardwick is only one mile (1.6 km) southeast of the Manchester City Centre, and it takes only about 20 minutes or less to arrive from here to the Manchester Airport by taxi or by minibus.

The River Medlock is North of Ardwick, and Cornbrook borders Ardwick in the South.  Ardwick Green located in this area was one of the most coveted places to live at one time.

The great-grandfather of famous author Breatrix Potter is among one of the prominent people who lived in this neighborhood. Nowadays, things have changed. Ardwick Green is now a busy intersection for passing through traffic and travelers, and.

Hyde Road and Stockport Road merge to the City of Manchester. In times past, gardens and ornamental pond used to be located here. These major changes as well as others happened after the Industrial Revolution took off during the 19th Century.

Mills were erected everywhere in this location. Industries included Lime, Iron, Boiler, Brick, Chemical, and Spindle works.  Several other industries were established here in Ardwick as well.

As a result, quite a bit of pollution was dumped into the River Cornbrook, and thus the river was nicknamed the “Black Brook”. Back to back residential homes were also adding to the decline of the environmental health of this area.

In the late 1840s, the Manchester & Birmingham Railway arrived in this area. It divided Ardwick into Lower Ardwick on one side and Higher Ardwick on the other. The railway viaducts built in this area are notable landmarks nowadays.

Local celebrities were born out of Ardwick. Benjamin Nicholls, who was mayor of Manchester, was one of them. Ellen Wilkinson who used to be MP as well as Minister of Education was also from here. Wilkinson was also a radical politician of the 1930s.

Around the same time period (before 1936??) the Mosleys and the Birches had lived at Ardwick Hall. The Great Universal Stores offices and warehouse now sit in that location.

John Rylands was also a resident of Ardwick (Ardwick Green). All these fine celebrities were part of the reason this area is known for its vast array of entertainment.

People come from hundreds-or even thousands-of miles around to the Ardwick Empire Theatre, the Coliseum and the Ardwick Picture Theatre. The Lido Dance and Queens Picture House also have become available in this area.

Above all of that, Billiards and Wrestling activities have been known to take place here. These were a part of the many traveling fairs that had often been set up in this area at Brunswick Street.
Another theatre was well-known in this area. It is called the Appollo Theatre, and is the only theatre that is still standing today in the area. Pop and rock concerts often take place here.

The Manchester Corporation Trams is conveniently located here. It is still a working bus station today and is located on Hyde Road.

Regeneration efforts have been made in Ardwick since 2002. The commonwealth Games now take place here, and new job opportunities have resulted from that new development.
