The River Medlock and the Ashton Canal both run though the Beswick area, which is a neighbor to Bradford. This area is most known for the Commonweatlh Games that are held here in 2002. This village is one of the financially poorer sections of Manchester.
However, Beswick is rich with history. It used to be a part of the ancient parish of Manchester. It was the smallest of voting districts in this area. In 1838 it became a part of the township of Manchester and joined with Ardwick in becoming a new municipal ward.
Since this location is one of the less wealthy of all it has become one of many places in the Manchester area which was added to the Poor Law list, and became part of what is now North Manchester.
The Philips Park is located in this area, on the south side of the River Medlock. The Philips Park Cemetery is located on the north side of this same river.
Mark Philips had established the above-mentioned park in 1846, and it became famous for its annual Tulip Festival. Furthermore, walking trails have been added to this location, which also now is characterised by its glasshouses and lakes designed for exotic plants.
The Philips Park cemetery was founded later, in 1863. The park and the cemetery is a prime visiting site year round.
Beswick has been targeted as an area of concern. Further regeneration plans are in the works for this location. It is part of the New Deal for Communities projects which has designated millions of pounds to renewal projects in Beswick as well as other East Manchester districts.
Major improvements to housing, environment, and education are being made in the area. Furthermore, the establishment of new health facilities is in the plans for the rebuilding of this location.
