Bleak Hey Nook to Manchester Airport
Bleak Hey Nook is located in the Pennines Hills, elevated at the Head of Diggle Valley. It is a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham and is located approximately 38 minutes from the Manchester Airport.
This area is primarily rural. Delph is located to the southwest and Marsden is situated to the northeast. Shaw is northwest of Bleak Hey Nook. Almost halfway from Bleak Hey Nook to Manchester Airport sits the localities of Mossley, Ashton-under-Lyne, and Stalybridge.
One feature somewhat unique to this area is the number of weavers cottages still standing within it. These cottages were built during the 18th century. People lived on the bottom floor and worked on the upper floor of these dwellings.
Another special characteristic of this place on the Oldham map is “Dirt Lane”. This is the nickname for Bleak Hey Nook Lane, of which both sides are lined with industry cottages. Rumor has it that one of these homes belonged to the Wrigley’s.
Another remarkably unusual landmark of Bleak Hey Nook is the large unused pub which sits in the Saddleworth area. As appears in a photo, the name “Horsey and Jockey” is placed in gold-plated letters on the now white chipped-paint building.
The reason this is such an unusual site is because generally these types of buildings are renovated and reopened. However, the main reason it may be still standing is it is hard to obtain permission to rebuild in the countryside.
Sheep farming is one of the main industries of this rural area today. In fact, these animals are allowed to roam free and are often caught standing in the middle of Harrop Dale and other roads.
This is probably one of the most remote yet interesting places to visit in the Greater Manchester Area. It is also a place of great development potential.
Those who appreciate the countryside have often toured this location. It is most ideal to call upon a reliable taxi company to serve all your transportation needs. That is why we are available to you 24/7/365.
One recommend bed & breakfast located in the general area is the Wellcroft House located in the Saddleworth Valley. It features the same type of cottage home that was formerly a residence of cottage industry producers.
Bleak Hey Nook provides plenty of opportunities for sight seeing. One favorite location to view the horizon is at A62 and A670, which is high in the Pennines and East of Oldham.
