Bolton is one of the ten metropolitan boroughs within the Great Manchester area. It is only about 30 to 45 minutes to travel from various major points within this borough to the Manchester Airport. Bolton consists of eight townships. Bolton, the town that bears this borough’s name is one of the largest. It was first formed in the 13th Century and industrialisation began in the 14th Century.

One activity that often takes place in the township of Bury its famous walk around town tour. It starts at Victoria Square from the town steps and works its way to Crompton Place, Henry’s All Day Bar, and Nelson Square, then you would progress on to Bradshawgate.

On this tour you will make different stops along the way such as to the local library and to a local steam engine. This famous tour ends at Great Moor Street, after you have passed the Canopy and the Newport Arcade.

The other townships of Bolton (the Borough) include the following:

Farnworth-This township is located about 25 minutes from the local airport. The name of the town means “hidden among the ferns”. Two major historical buildings located in this town are the Town Hall and adjacent Carnegie library. The Hall began service in the early 1900s.

Another historical piece of architecture is the local post office, which first opened in 1836. Before this time, this town received mail at the St. John Farnworth.

Visitors often attend the annual Farnworth Fair. It has taken place since 1827. Moreover, travelers and locals both enjoy shopping at Market Street.

Several significant memorials stand in this town as well. One of the most notable is the Farnworth Park Memorial.

Additionally, this area is inundated with local performing arts, culture, and night life. For instance, The Farnworth Little Theatre hosts amateur productions. Furthermore, often people come to the Shakespeare Pub to have a drink or two (or perhaps one too many). Likewise, people can relax and sip coffee at the very lively Cyber Surf Café.

A little practical joke is played quite a bit in this town as well. People are often sent to bowl in the corner of the Farnworth bowling green. However, this green is actually round-not a corner.

Horwich-This location was a major hunting ground during the 13th Century. Since then, this area has become industralised. Major industries include cotton weaving companies and bleach works.

Several mills powered by water were also established in the area. Later on, this area was monetized by coal mining and sandstone quarry operations. A train ran though until the 1940s.

Visitor’s attractions include Old Station Park, Horwich Parish CE School, and Horwich Parish Church. This area is also now rich with shopping opportunity at the local market malls. Additionally, market propers are open every Tuesday and Friday and “carboot” stalls are open every Sunday.

One of the most memorable pieces of architecture that stands in this town is the Horwich Parish Church of the Holy Trinity. Its foundation was constructed in 1830 and the church itself was completed about a year later.

This area offers quite a bit for recreation at the local leisure centre. It was opened by Princess Anne in 1975. Facilities inside include squash, gym, and large sports hall.

Horwich is a twin town to Crowborough in East Sussex. It takes about 35 minutes to travel this area to the Manchester Airport. 

Westhoughton-This town has been in existence since the Mid-1200s (approximately). The Town Hall of Westhoughton was built in 1903. This township is located about a half hour driving distance from Manchester Airport.

One of the most important attractions to see while in Westboughton is the memorial mural painted for the Royalists soldiers who fought in the Battle On Cart Hammon. It is painted above the local market hall.

Pretoria Pit is another major memorial site. It is the site of a major mining underground disaster which killed 344 people. Only three persons lived to tell about it. This tragedy affected the entire town.

This town only is about 4 km (6.44 km) southwest of Bolton. Market Street can be accessed from Westboughton very easily. Moreover, great accommodations such as the White Lion Inn are available.

Blackrod-This village is about 10 km (6 mi) from Bolton, and is a little over 30 minutes from the Manchester Airport.

Blackrod has very ancient roots dating as far back as Roman Times in 77 A.D. The earliest record of ownerships was in 1125 by William Peverel.

One of the oldest buildings that standing in Blackrod is St. Katherine’s Church. It was first built in the late 1330s.

Blackrod has several viewing points. One of the best places for observation is in the north from Tanner’s Row. The A6, a major road between London and Lancaster is visible from this location, as well as the horizon miles ahead.

Kearsley-This was one of the major mining locations of the 1790s. Kearsley Mill also was located once in this area, and was formerly a major spinning company. It is now a local shopping centre, and close by is also a major sports and leisure centre

Another major historical site besides the Kearsley Mill area is the stocks which have been preserved near an ancient bridge. This was an area of scattered housing developments at one time.

Additionally, bull and bear waiting used to be held under the bridge, and time off of work was taken for events such as porridge eating, smoking matches, eating matches, and other events. Today, numerous large estate homes are built on the lands near the ancient bridge.

Across the water on the other side of the ancient bridge is the Ringley Chapel. A clear view of it can be spotted from the bridge. This bridge used to be a very important crossing point from Bolton.

The Manchester Airport can be accessed very easily by taxi from Kearsely. The distance between the two is only a little over 20 minutes, depending upon your exact destination.

Little Lever-This It is located a half hour from the Manchester Airport. Little Lever used to be a mining town, and now has grown into a small residential area. A shopping centre is located in the central part of this little village. St. Matthew’s church is also situated here.

This area is most noted for the plague that wiped out a third of this little village’s population. This tragedy took place in 1623. However, since then this area has recovered and is a place that many people visit. It is also a place to find a nice family home.

On a more positive note, Little Lever is home to a very prestigious learning centre called the Little Lever School Specialist Language College. It is up the road from the Moses Café. Furthermore, a state-of-the-art sports and leisure centre is accessed from this area.

 

South Turton-This is an urban district within Bolton that was split in two in 1974. Depending upon point of destination, it takes approximately 40 minutes to arrive to hotels, attractions, and other meeting places within this area of the Borough of Bolton.

Areas within South Turton and the vicinity include the following:

Bradshaw-This section of South Turton is known for its “church without a tower and tower without a church.”

The name of this local churchless tower is called the Chapel Ease. A bell still hangs inside this tower, which was intended to be added to the Bolton Parish Church.

To the north of Bradshaw is Bromley Cross. Castle Hill is situated to the south and east of Bradshaw is Hardwood. These locations are only about 35 to 30 minutes away from the Manchester Airport.

Dunscar is also in the vicinity of South Turton. Various destination points in Dunscar and surrounding locations are only between 20 and 30 minutes from the airport.

Egarton- This municipality is a part of the Bolton borough located in the Greater Manchester area.  Egerton is about 3 miles (4.83 km) North of Bolton. It is about a 34 minute drive to the local airport.

A famous memorial is located in Egarton-The Dunscar War Memorial. Hundreds of people gather every Remembrance Sunday to honor those who fought in fierce battles.

This place also has a local hometown restaurant which is highly recommended. It is called the Egerton House Restaurant. The menu of this famous upscale hotel dining establishment changes daily.

Eagley-One of the characteristics of this little village is the cottages built of stone. These are considered very desirable places to live. Furthermore, an old mill has been divided into several different-sized apartments.

Eagley is located about 36 minutes from the Manchester Airport. It is very close to many major attractions as well as four and five start hotels. Furthermore, many alternative lodging accommodations are often available near this village.

Harwood-This area is situated between Castle Hill to the north and Bromley Cross to the south. Hardwood Lee is to the east beneath Affetside Cross.

Affetside Cross is a very distinctive artifact located on Watling Street. It is said to be the site of where Julius X had established a temporary camp. The Affetside is located half way between London and Edinburgh.

Thus, the London or Edinburgh area airports can be easily accessed to and from this point as well as the Manchester Airport.
