Burnage is located approximately 15 minutes from the Manchester airport. This little area has been at one time coined simply as the prettiest area in Manchester by writer George Bernard Shaw. Manchester minibus services and airport taxis are available whenever you are ready .
It was one of the few areas of Manchester that was not drowned by industrilisation efforts in the 19th Century. Instead, most of its revenue was earned from hand weaving cottage industries.
In fact, many of the cottages owned by weavers are still standing today. These cottages have made up a small village which is located along parts of Burnage Lane, which marks the path to a main road leading to Cheshire from the south.
The name “Burnage” was said to most likely be a misinterpretation of the words “Brown Hedge” or similar. One explanation of this is the brown stone walls (hedges) which stood in this area during medieval times. Burnage became officially a part of Manchester in 1904.
The famous Burnage Hall is located here. It is a centre that was built in 1849 by John Watts. Watts’ father had also been an architect, and had constructed the Watts Warehouse located on Portland Street. This warehouse is now the Britannica Hotel, and Burnage Hall was destroyed in 1911.
Before the Bishop of Manchester moved to Higher Broughton, he had been stationed in Mauldeth Hall in Green End, Burnage. Other noted persons who are associated with Burnage include writer Frances Hodgson Burnett and Musicians Liam and Noel Gallagher (Oasis rock group).
The members of the Oasis rock group were born in this area. Moreover, their mother still owns a house in this district’s village.
Efforts have been made to renew this area since the early 1900s. For example, Garden Village was developed. This included new houses which were semi-detached, along with open recreational courtyards and playgrounds. Activities such as bowling, tennis, and relaxation began to take place here.
More home construction had taken place in this area in the early 1920s. For instance, the Kingsway Housing Estate was founded.
Burnage is only 6.4 km (4 mi) from the Manchester City Centre. Therefore, it is in a convenient location, relative to find cuisine, night clubs, casinos, hotels, and conferences.
