Chorlton-cum-Hardy means “the dwelling of the coerts by trees and near water”. It is located about 26 minutes from the Manchester Airport. Our taxis or minibus -for-hire will be happy to take you there.

It is one of the less-industralised areas of Manchester. In fact, even today farming still takes place here. The historical Jackson’s Boat, which is a pub, still serves customers in this district. It is located on Hardy Lane. Likewise, the Chorlton Green pub Horse & Jockey is still open for business.

Moreover, Chorlton Green still represents the flavor of the Victorian Era. The Horse & Jockey pub is located along the riverside and offers a perfect spot for both visitors and locals to relax and unwind.

On a more somber note, Chorlton and surrounding areas is known for its Southern Cemetery. This is the largest burial plot in all of Manchester. Famous people such as Sir Matt Busby, the manager of the Manchester United Football Club are buried here.

Chorlton-cum-Hardy is a part of Chorltonville, which became a “garden state” In 1908. During this time the area was lined with pleasantly-designed homes.

Since the early 1900s, Chorltonville had become one of the area’s most-coveted places of residence. Two homes of note in this area, include the Hough End Hall and Barlow Hall estates.

Hough End Hall was built in 1596 by Nicholas Mosley, who was a part of a very affluent family. Mosley himself became Lord of the Manor of Manchester during his lifetime as well. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I.

The Mosley family is the group after whom Mosley Street was named after. The Egertons, another wealthy family who lived in the area during the 18th Century, was the second family to own the Hough End Hall.

Portions of the property of the Hough Hall are now police horse and dog training grounds. Barlow Hall, another building that is worth noting still stands in this location, was also bought by the Edgertons during the 18th Century.

Barlow Hall was named after the Barlow family. Edward Barlow, a man who was later ordained as Saint Ambrose Barlow was a notable member of this family. He had become a martyr for the local Catholic cause. Barlow hall is presently a golf club house.

Other residences of the Chorlton and surrounding areas were constructed with a thatched roof. They were colored black and white. This trend lasted for quite a number of years, until the late 1880s.

The present-day Chorlton homes are of an Edwardian and Victorian flavor. Many of these homes have been converted into apartment complexes and flats.

Many people live in Chorltonville and then commute to the Manchester City Centre for work. Moreover, Chorltonville and Chorlton-cum-hardy houses a very large student population.

Chorlton-cum-Hardy and surrounding areas is known for its diverse shopping venues. Furthermore, the Beech Road Festival which takes place every June features different arts, crafts, and foods of all kinds.

A political event called the Unity Festival usually takes place annually in this location as well. Musicians, dancers, and singers all perform at this event. Stalls are set up here as well.
