Collyhurst means “Wooded Hill”. The reason why is because it is made almost entirely of sandstone, which has the appearance of wood. This area is also called the Red Bank as a result of the rich red color of the rocky hills.
Historical buildings located in Collyhurst include the Manchester Cathedral, Roman Fort, and the home of Sir Nicholas Mosley. This district was transformed from a quite rural town to a major coal mining location during the of the Industrial Revolution.

One of the achievements most attributed to Collyhurst is its contribution to the punk rock scene. Bands such as the Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Joy Division (formerly Warsaw), and Buzzcocks played locally.
These bands were hosted in the mid-1970s in this location at the The Electric Circus, which used to be a bingo hall. It was located on Rochdale Road.
