Fallowfield used to be divided between the Northern and Southern Districts of Rusholme and Withington. Today Rusholme and Withington are separated from Fallowfield, forming two additional Manchester city districts.
The population of Fallowfield increased during the 19th Century. Many of the middle class families that wanted to move away from the industrialization of the inner cities had moved here. Some of the finest houses were built here, including one built by Alfred Waterhouse. He was the man who also built the Manchester Town Hall.
Later on, Fallowfield became just as industrialized as the surrounding areas. This changed with the advancement of railroad routes through this district.
Another major change included the establishment of the Harris Stadium, which was formerly known as the Fallowfield Stadium. This structure took the place of Firs Farm, which used to be one of the largest agricultural grounds in Fallowfield.
The 1893 FA Cup was place in the Harris Stadium. Since then, this stadium has been torn down and replaced by the Richmond Parks Halls of Residence now owned by Manchester University.
Fallowfield also prides itself on being the home of the prestigious Manchester Grammar School. It is now located in Old H all Lane, moved from Long Millgate during the 1930s. Students within this school often rank the top ten among all students in the UK in the area of academic achievement.
Today Fallowfield is the temporary home of a large number of students. Wilmslow Road is the main drive through this place. Numerous takaway food places and convenient stores are also located here-for students and visitors.
Actors who graduated from Manchester Grammar School include famous actors Robert Powell and Ben Kingsley. Writer Alan Garner also had originated from this area.
An area of natural interest within Fallowfield is the cycle path that runs along the former
Fallowfield Loop Railway line. This path is enjoyed by locals and visitors.
Additional historical significance of the Fallowfield district includes that of the Jewish community and church South Manchester Synagogue. The synagogue was founded in 1872, and then had moved to various locations since this time.
Fallowfield is located approximately 4.8 km (3 mi) south of the Manchester City Centre. Therefore, it is conveniently located near a large number of historical and cultural attractions.
