Gorton officially became a part of Manchester in 1909. It is approximately 19 miles or 30.5 kilometres or 19 miles from the Manchester Airport. There are many minibuses and taxis available when you need them to get to your destination.
Gorton had seen dramatic changes in development since the time of the Industrial Revolution. Some of the most famous landmarks of the area include the Ashton Canal, which is located on Gorton Lane. This is where the Gorton Mill was established, creating new jobs for over 1,500 new people.
Railways that arrived into the area also brought more opportunity for workers in this area. The Manchester, Sheffield and Ashton Railway was established 1845 and the Sheffield and Midland Joint Railway was created in 1875.
All the railroads built in the area merged into the “Gordon Tank” area. Rolling rock was serviced and maintained in this located for many years under the name Beyer Peacock Railway Works which later became the Gorton Foundry. This rail factory ceased production in 1966.
Since the time of the discontinuation of the railroad works, it has been built over. Only those who know what to look for-and if they look closely enough-are able to tell that a railroad ever existed here at all.
One of the oldest architectural sites located in the Gorton area is the Franciscan Monastery. It is also located on Gorton Lane. It is one mark of historical distinction that is worth visiting, and yet awaits re-construction. This structure was built by Edward Pugin and was once one of the most important perishes located in the area.
Another very distinctive landmark that is still popular today is the Gorton Reservoir in Gorton Park. It is located on Hyde Road, and includes a pleasant walking path which provides a romantic setting for couples, especially at night. Locals and visitors both enjoy this spot.
The infamous murder partners Myra Hindly and Ian Brady came from this area. They were convicted of killing four children between 1963 and 1964. On a lighter note, the British TV comedy series Shameless was filmed in the area.
Gorton is located almost directly northwest of the Manchester City Centre. Therefore, it is conveniently located near major shopping districts, night clubs, casinos, and hotels. Several parks besides the one located in Gorton are only a short drive away as well.
