Moston is a rural district that houses a population of 12,500 people. It is located on the Northern Manchester city line. From the 12th Century (long before being incorporated as part of Manchester) until the 19805s, this area remained as a peaceful and attractive countryside.
During the 14th Century, the Moston Family had constructed Moston Hall. Other local groups also settled nearby. The names of other wealthy families that had moved into the area include the Bowkers, the Chaddertons, the Chethams and the Egertons.
All the above-mentioned affluent families represent a very important part of this area’s history. Therefore various places within this immediate Manchester area are named after them.
As in other local Manchester districts and suburbs, bleaching and washing became one major source of revenue. A large portion of these services were introduced to this locality via the cottage industry venue.
Moston is an area that did not follow suit with the industrial revolution-most likely because of its location on the map. However, the population began to increase when the Moston Pit began its operation in 1850 and even more so when the Moston Mill was built in 1910.
However, the Moston Pit had closed its doors already by 1950. Despite all of this the population had increased from a mere 50 people to over 1000 people as a result of industrialization which finally hit this area.
Michael Wood is one of the well-known celebrities that came from Moston. The local poet and playwright Ben Brierley and social reformer and political reformer also came from this location.
Actress Marsha Thompson and football legend Ishmael Miller are also citizens of this area. Author of The Moston Story (Fr Brian Seale)is also associated with this location as well.
Moston was incorporated along with Blackley in 1890. The name of it represents the farmsteads and the peat moss vegetation that is characteristic of this area’s history.
Moston is located only 6 km (4 mi) from the Manchester City Centre. Today it is predominantly a residential area. However, being so close to the center of Manchester makes it a convenient place to visit-near numerous local attractions.
If you need a ride to anywhere in Moston or anywhere else within the Greater Manchester Area we can help. We serve this area as well as other places in the UK.
