The locals call this district “Newton”. The bodies of waters located around it include the River Medlock, the Moston Brook, the Newton Brook, and Shooters Brook.
A historical structure called the Culceth Hall used to stand by the river Medlock. It was owned by the Byrons, and was the residence of the late poet Lord Byron. The Clayton Hall which was owned by the Greaves family and both the Whitworth and Hulme Halls were also situated here.
The earliest settlers to arrive to the Newton Heath area were Frcnch Huguenons. This group settled here in the 16th Century after fleeing continental persecution. They introduced cotton and weaving to the area, and also taught bleaching skills to the locals.
Newton Heath became one of the most industrialised sections of the City of Manchester. The Newton Silk Mill was established here in 1825 and the Monsall Silk Dye Works arrived soon after.
One of the most significant landmarks of Newton Heath is the Rochdale Canal. It was used to move raw materials and manufactured products. It was once the main form of commerce transportation.
The types of industries that used this canal to ship include a soap factory, match producer, and engineering factories. A glass company also used the Canal for shipping purposes.
A large work force had migrated to this area at one time. Therefore, long stretches of low-cost homes were built in the area. This marked the beginning of the chance from agriculture to industrialisation in this area.
During the 18th Century, the Oldman Road was turnpiked. A tool bar was placed at Lambs Lane. This is still the main travel line through this area.
During the 19th Century, the population of Newton Heath had increased approximately 20 times. This came along with the construction of the Canal as well as the railroad (arriving in the 1849s.)
Newton Heath is also a sports’ town. They are known for the Manchester United Football Club which originated here. They started out as a football team in 1879 and by 1892 they were admitted to the Football League. This team’s name was later changed to Manchester United Football Club.
Later on, Newton Heath became a major engineering centre. Mather & Platt, Avro and Heenan & Froude all were erected. The Blackpool Tower was manufactured in this town.
