The town of Oldham lies between the Rivers Irk and Medlock. It is situated within the Pennines Mountains, and is approximately 11.1 km northeast of the city of Manchester. It is also about 8.5 km south-southeast of Rochdale. Oldham is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham.

Oldham was one of the first towns to become industrialised. Cotton and textile were the major sources of revenues to this area during the Industrial Revolution. In fact, this town was once considered the most productive cotton spinning mill town in the world.

Believe it or not, this little town of Oldham spun more cotton than all of France and Germany combine. This momentum lasted until about the middle of the 20th Century, and its last mill closed in 1998.

Other industries that had made their way into the Oldham area over the years included engineering and coal mining works.

Historical buildings of significance in Oldham include the Georgian-built Town Hall and the Oldham’s War Memorial. Other important pieces of historical architecture include the building that houses the Oldham Parish Church of St. Mary with St. Peter and other gothic style churches.

A major place of interest in this town is the area’s Civic Centre. It is a white-brick building which stands 15 stories high. It is the centre for governance in this town.

Chadderton-This town is located at the foothills of the Pennines, a local mountain range. It is close to the River Irk and is situation on the Rochdale Canal. This town experienced one of the most rapid rates of expansion during the Industrial Revolution.

Like many other towns in the area, it had become a centre for cotton and textile manufacturing. Likewise, the need for this industry had declined in the 20th Century as in most of the districts and towns in this area. A notable person born in Chadderton is David Platt, who was a famous football player in England. This town was also the home of British freestyle champion triple gold medal swimmer Henry Taylor.

The Chadderton War Memorial and second building of the Town Hall are still present within this area today. A place of interest most visited in this area is the Chadderton Hall Park. Failsworth-This is another town located in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. It is fairly large, with a population of approximately 20,555.

One the most unique and famous landmarks of this town is the Failsworth Pole. The one standing on this site replaced the pole which previously was blown down in a major wind storm in 1950. In 2006, a clock tower and bronze statue of Benjamin Brierly was added to the surrounding area, which was turned into landscaped gardens. Another important landmark of this area is the cenopath, which stands at the corner of Oldham Road at Ashton Road. It was built in 1923 to honor Failsworth men who died in World War I.

A place of natural interest in Failsworth is the Daisy Nook Country Park. It runs right through the Medlock Valley.

Royton-It is primarily a residential district with a population of 20, 961 as of 2001. It was one of the major cotton towns of the Industrial Revolution.

The Royton War Memorial, one of the area’s primary landmarks, stands on the peak of Tandle Hill. It is dedicated to World War II soldiers who died in battle. It includes a sculpture of winged victory on it.

A significant historical site is the Royton’s Library which was donated by Andrew Carnegie. The town hall is another building which represents a very important part of architectural history. The Royton Town Hall’s Tower is made from copper. Royton is about 29 minutes driving distance to the Manchester Airport. Shaw and Crompton- Only 32 minutes away from the Manchester Airport is Shaw and Crompton. This is a town and civil parish which is located in the borough of Oldham. It’s most significant and unique landmark in the town is the Big Lamp.

The current lamp is an electric-powered replica of an earlier model, which is about 6 metres (2 feet) high. The original lamp was gas-powered and stood six metres (20 feet) into the air. The area which the new Big Lamp Stands is now called Big Lamp Roundabout, after a new section of road that had been added. This reconstruction took place in the 1990s.

Lees-Another significant district of Oldham is this village. It is about 3.2 km (2 mi) east of Oldham. It borders Springhead and Saddleworth at the foothills of the Pennine Mountains. This border is historically known as “County End”.
Helen Bradly a well-known artist who was born in Lees. British Politician Philip Woolas currently resides in this town, and is a member of the Oldham Parliament for East and Saddleworth. 

Saddleworth-One of the most well-known parishes in Oldham is this one. It encompasses the villages of Uppermill, Greenfield, Delph, Diggle, and others located on the West Side of the Pennine ranges.
This parish is noted for a number of annual traditions. For example, a walk is usually schedule by Saddleworth church members. This event usually takes place on White Friday.

The following Saturday to Whit Friday is usually the Date of Beer Walk. (This could be considered a contradiction to the in some people’s eyes. However, it seems that this town knows how to have fun.)
