Openshaw was first owned by Robert Grelley, the Lord of the Manor of Manchester. It used to be a private hunting ground owned by the Grelleys.
During the 17th Century, this forest area was cleared in order to make room for farmland and pasture areas. The trees that were cut down provided timber for the English Navy.
Later on, this area was known for its cottage industry movement. The main commodities of it were dyeing and bleaching. Shortly afterwards, Openshaw became one of the prime targets of the Industrial Revolution.
The population of this area increased thirty times during the 19th Century. Workers were imported to fulfill the duties of the Armstrong Whitworth Ordinance Factory.
The Beyer Peacock Railway had been built in the Opeshaw area during this time as well. These yards later were named the “Gorton Tank”. Openshaw was also known for it political activism.
The Socialism and Trades Unionism organisation grew in numbers in this area. Thus, the Openshaw Socialists group was formed in 1910. Kier Hardie, the founder of the Labour Party was chosen as this socialist interest group’s inaugural speaker.
This lead way to events such as the inauguration of Annie Lee, who became Manchester’s first socialist women’s alderman. This was in 1936. She was the secretary of the Openshaw Labour Party since the 1890s.
The Ordinance works had closed down after World War II. Therefore, there was not much need for the railroads, and the service to this area was discontinued.
The population of Openshaw had rapidly declined since the end of the Second World War, only being a fraction of what it used to be.
The Manchester Regeneration Scheme has noticed Openshaw as a target area for new development and improvement. New businesses are starting to enter this area as a result.
