Rusholme is noted for many things. For instance, the Platts Fields Park is located in the vicinity. Visitors often frequent Platt Hall, which is now called the Gallery of Costume.
Platt Hall was once the home of the Worsely family. The famous Cromwellian General Charles Worsley was one who lived in this dwelling.
Another home of prominence that used to stand in this area was the Birch Fold Cottage. It was torn down in 1912 and now one of the streets in the area is named after this family (Birth Hall Road). Dickinson Road runs though the same area, and is named after the second family to own the Birch home.
A park was named after the Birches as well-Birchfields Park. It is also worth noting that the first BBC television station was located at the Dickenson Road-Wilmslow Road intersection.
Over the centuries, Rusholme had changed from an agricultural centre to a residential location. Platt Fields Park was turned into large viewing gardens.
The famous radio announcer Neville Cardus is one person that helped make Rusholme what it is now. He was born in this district in 1891. Other prominent people such as L.S. Lowry and Ford Madox Brown also lived and/or worked there for a time.
More and more people are emigrating to Rusholme more than ever since the beginning of the 20th Century-especially from Asia. As a result, numerous Indian and Asian restaurants have sprung up in the area.
In fact, Rusholme is often called the “Curry Mile” because of the extent of middle-eastern takeaway and dining restaurants located here. In addition to India food, Chinese and Persian cuisine is available.
French dining as well as other types of European restaurants are also serving the public as well. You will never tire of finding great menus to choose from at local Rusholme establishments.
Rusholme is bordered by Chorlton-on-Medlock to the north, Moss Side to the west, Fallowfield to the south, and Victoria Park to the east. It was formerly an independent town, and then was incorporated into Manchester in 1885.
