During the 19th Century Stretford was known as a farming village. Its former name was Porkhampton, as large numbers of pigs were produced for sale in the area. Major stretches of Porkhampton (Stretford) farmland also produced vegetable for local markets.

Industrialisation started to take place in Stretford in the late 19th Century. From this time on, the number of people employed in agricultural in this location rapidly declined. As of 2001, only about 1% of the people in this town were working in an agricultural field.

Stretford became a sports town over the years as well. It is home to the Manchester United Football Club and the Lancashire County Cricket Club.
