The name of this town is said to derive from the practice of raising pigs (pig-rearing).  An early form of this town’s name was called Swine Town.

This town was owned by the managers of Whalley Abbey. Speaking of the Abbey, it is now a uses as a conference retreat centre. This Abbey is a Grade I listed historical building as it holds great significance.

The Town Hall sits on the premises of the former Industrial School which was visited by famous classic author Charles Dickens. This school visited by Dickens was opened in 1843 and served as an educational facility until 1920.

The Swinton Town Hall, which now sites on the former Industrial School site, is most known for its clock tower. This tower stands 38 metres (124.64 feet) high.

Another historical site of interested located in this town is the Victoria House and corresponding Victoria Park. Swinton and Pendlebury town meetings where once held in this location before the construction of the new Town Hall.

Additionally, another significant building stands in this location-the Wardley Hall. This is the headquarters for the Bishop of Salford and the Salford Diocese.

Swinton is home to various sports occasions as well. The Swinton Lions, an area championship Rugby team, was stationed here until 1992. After that time they were relocated to Bury.

Swinton was also the home of a junior football team. Ryan Giggs, who later played for the Manchester United, started his career while playing on this team.
