During the Industrial Revolution, Walkden was a prime center for coal mining and textile manufacturing. Today it is home to about 38, 685 people.

Walkden is most noted for Ellesmere Centre, which is a local shopping mall. One of the most remarkable characteristics of this shopping centre is the way it which it was carefully crafted. Inside the foyer of the Ellesmere Centre a uniquely-designed clock can be viewed from the ground floor (foyer area).

The Ellesmere clock tower was originally meant for miners to know when their lunch break was over. The tradition was to set this massive timepiece to ring 13 times, instead of one time like most clocks.

The reason why was because some people would not hear the single one o’clock bell stroke. Mining companies made sure there was no mistake in determining what time it is, and even the newly-built clock tower still rings 13 times at this time.

All types of shops are open to the public within the Ellesmere Centre. Key Cutting shops, jewelry dealers, women’s boutiques, and children’s clothing stores are among the many venders displayed within.

On the first floor, even more vendors sell their goods. This level can be reached from one of two moving walkways.

The Ellesmere Retail Park is also located in the same area as the Ellesmere Shopping Centre. This area includes a video store, sports shops, and fast-food restaurants.

A small pond is also located on the north side of the Retail Park premises. Anglers traditionally frequent this spot.

Another area of Walkden of great interest is the Blackbeach Country Park. It was formerly an industrial park and then it was turned into a wildlife reserve.

Notable persons who either lived in or were born in Walkden include the following: British Light-Middleweight Boxing Champion Jamie Moore, Actor Alan Halsall, and singer Sarah Whatmore. Famous footballer Alan Ball MBE and Salford RFLC chairman also resided in this town.
